View Original Art, See Fountain House Gallery Artists at Work on Governors Island

Third Session of Artist Residencies Will Begin September 1

Immersive Mental Health Installation Opening Date Is to be Announced

NEW YORK CITY – Fountain House Gallery and Studio, representing artists living with mental illness, announces the third of three artist residencies in its participation as an Organization in Residence at Governors Island for the 2023 season. The third resident exhibition and studio work session will commence on September 1, 2023, and conclude on October 29, 2023 at House #410A on Colonels Row. Hours: Friday through Sunday, 11:00am-5:00pm.

This third session of artist residencies provides a continuing opportunity for the public to view our artists’ work and have a window into their process,” said Rachel Weisman, Director of Fountain House Gallery. “During this season on Governors Island, we have welcomed more than 3,000 visitors to our designated historic house on Colonels Row, where the two ground-floor rooms serve as an exhibition space, with four rooms on the top floor utilized as studio space. We see the space as an incubator for contemporary thought and visibility around the intersections of mental illness, and we embrace this nontraditional working and exhibition environment that encourages organizations to connect with a diverse and growing audience. We look forward to announcing the Governors Island opening date of an immersive outdoor installation titled YELL!, which has been created to parallel the daunting journey through an unfriendly and obtuse mental health system.”

Artists participating in the third session of residencies are: Bernadette Corcoran, Guiomar Giraldo-Baron, Kerry Kennedy, Valerie Kerr, Aracelis Rivera, and Boo Lynn Walsh.

In addition to hosting the residencies of three groups of artists during the 2023 term, Fountain House Gallery and Studio will continue to present various public programming events.

During the spring, summer, and early fall months each year, more than two dozen arts, culture, and education organizations utilize space inside Governors Island’s historic former military houses through Governors Island Arts’ annual Organizations in Residence program — presenting exhibitions, holding free public programs, and hosting artist residencies. This year's term will conclude on October 31, 2023.

Fountain House Gallery and Studio is funded, in part, by generous support from the Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust, and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund.
