Fountain House Gallery Presents “SEEN: Portraits of Fountain House Artists

by Photographer Carmel Fromson”

On view: June 2 – 29, 2022

Reception: June 2, 6-8 pm

NEW YORK CITY  Fountain House Gallery, which represents artists living with mental illness, announces the upcoming exhibition SEEN: Portraits of Fountain House Artists by Photographer Carmel Fromson. The show will open with a Reception on June 2, 2022, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and will remain on view through June 29, 2022.

Carmel Fromson has been photographing great works of art paintings, sculpture, silver, glass and jewelry – for 30 years. Her professional background encompasses 19 years as staff photographer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, two years as staff photographer at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, and project photographer at the Corcoran Gallery. Fromson is Chair of the Fountain House Gallery Advisory Board, a Fountain House Council member and former Board member. She is the 2022 recipient of the Esther Montanez Leadership Award, established in memory of Fountain House Gallery’s Founding Director. The Award will be presented at an event titled “Rise,” Fountain House Gallery’s Art Auction & Benefit, to be held on June 9, 2022, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at Metropolitan Pavilion, located at 125 West 18th Street in Manhattan.

Said Fromson, “Fountain House Gallery artists are refreshingly honest, and it has been a great pleasure to celebrate them via portraits in which they will be ‘seen’ by the Fountain House community, and by the wider public. Many years ago, after the Gallery opened its doors in 2000, I was asked to photograph 10 works by 10 artists. I went into the project assuming that this was an art therapy program, but I was astonished by the quality of the work and came to the realization that this is not a ‘social work’ project; these are proficient contemporary artists.”

Nearly 60 Gallery artists are represented in SEEN. The portraits were shot during a series of sessions held over the past several months. Each color photograph measures 21 ½ inches in height by 16 ¼ inches in width.

This program is funded, in part, by generous support from the Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, the David Rockefeller Fund, and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund.

About Fountain House Gallery

Fountain House Gallery and Studio provides an environment where artists living with mental illness can express their creative visions and exhibit their work. Founded by Fountain House in 2000, the Manhattan-based Gallery sells original artworks and collaborates with a wide network of artists, curators and cultural institutions. The Studio, located in Long Island City, is a collaborative workspace that furthers the professional practice of our artists. Embracing artists who are emerging or established, trained or self-taught, Fountain House Gallery cultivates artistic growth, makes a vital contribution to the New York arts community, and challenges the stigma surrounding mental illness.
