Fountain House Gallery Artists Show Work at Plaxall Gallery

By: Camille Tibaldeo and Ella Veres

Works by more than 40 artists, including 10 artists representing Fountain House Gallery, are currently on view in the exhibition Inside/Outsideat the Plaxall Gallery, located at 5-25 46th  Avenue in Long Island City. Organized in partnership with the Flushing Interfaith Council, this thought-provoking show reflects the participating artists’ personal experience of mental illness and addresses the suffering, the healing, and the stigma associated with mental health. In sharing their perspectives on the impact that mental illness exerts on their artistic practice and overall well-being, these artists bring their unique viewpoints to the wider public.

A gala opening event for Inside/Outsidetook place on March 9at Plaxall’s 12,000 square-foot space, so vast that it easily accommodates additional exhibitions and events running concurrently with this one. The Plaxall reception was abuzz with artists and guests, including children (and several canine attendees!). The New York art world turned out in force to view the dazzling array of sculpture, painting, and mixed media works displayed in the show, magnificently curated by Nancy Bruno. Kudos to the gifted Fountain House Gallery artists participating in Inside/Outside: Susan Baus. Richard Courage, Issa Ibrahim, Louise Kavadlo, Angela Rogers,Gail Shamchenko, Susan Spangenberg,Maura Terese, Alyson Vega, and Ella Veres.

The Plaxall Gallery is operated by the non-profit arts advocacy organization Long Island City Artists, Inc. (LIC-A), whose mission is to further the development and visibility of professional and emerging artists in Long Island City. LIC is a thriving art hub, and with Fountain House Studio now well established in the area, relationships with neighboring organizations such as Plaxall/LIC-A are invaluable in promoting the work of Fountain House Gallery artists.

The Flushing Interfaith Council works to build a community that fulfills and surpasses the dream of toleration voiced by the Flushing Remonstrance more than 350 years ago. Its mission is to discover how members of the diverse faith and cultural traditions in Flushing can celebrate differences while acknowledging commonalities as well as the worth and dignity of each.

Fountain House Gallery artist Maura Terese will participate in a panel discussion on art and mental health to be held at the Plaxall Gallery on April 4, 5:30-7:00 pm. The exhibitionwill remain on view through April 7, 2019. Hours: Thursdays, 6-10 pm; Saturdays/Sundays, 12-5 pm.
